Measuring ISHE using the PPMS/DynaCool/VersaLab

6/25/2018

Our distributor Quantum Design has issued an Application Note that describes how to use a our new dedicated ISHE CPW suitable for the CryoFMR probe available for the PPMS/DynaCool/VersaLab platforms.
If we consider a ferromagnet/non-magnetic bilayer (e.g. Ni80Fe20/Pd) undergoing FMR, a diffusive flow of spin from the Ni80Fe20 ferromagnet will enter the non-magnetic Pd layer due to a phenomenon known as spin pumping. Then, via the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE), which can be significant in non-magnetic layers with a large spin-orbit interaction (e.g. Pt, W, Pd, etc.), this diffusive flow of spins will be converted into a measurable transverse DC voltage. Our new CPW integrates electrical contacts for measuring this ISHE generated voltage and are via the standard sample chamber wiring connected to a separate input on the CryoFMR spectrometer. The ISHE voltage is measured using the same lock-in amplifier used to measure the FMR response.

The MPMS 3 is now FMR ready

4/24/2018

At the INTERMAG conference in Singapore NanOsc Instruments introduced its new compact set of insert and wave guides for the MPMS 3. This adds yet another cryostat to the range of supported systems for broadband FMR analysis with varying temperature using the CryoFMR spectrometers.
Broadband FMR spectroscopy allows for measurements continuously spanning several 10’s of GHz. Measurements over a wide frequency range allow for significant improvements in accurately extracting a variety of material parameters not accessible by static measurement techniques.
Broadband FMR is particularly well-suited for studying magnetic thin films, which not only form the backbone of fundamental spintronics and magnonics research but are also constituents of current and future technologies focused on magnetic memories, sensors, logic, and microwave signal processing.

NanOsc Instruments displayed the latest additions to its product line of broadband FMR spectrometers, the PhaseFMR-8 for room temperature measurements, and the CryoFMR-8 for variable temperature measurements. These entry level FMR spectrometers with advanced analysis capabilities are excellent for physics education and materials research. The easy to use software provides Lorentzian curve fitting and parameter extraction for both in-plane and out-of-plane analysis of thin films giving the gyromagnetic ratio, saturation magnetization, damping, inhomogeneous broadening, and anisotropy.

NanOsc wins Vinnova R&D grant on Graphene Spintronics

12/1/2014

NanOsc has won a significant R&D grant on Graphene Spintronics in Vinnova's Strategic Innovation Area "SIO Grafen". Among the seven funded projects, NanOsc's "Graphene based microwave signal generators" received the most funding (~€100,000) and has an enormous potential to revolutionize how wideband (1-100 GHz) microwave signals can be generated, modulated and detected in future graphen based microwave devices.

Purpose and Objective

Demonstrate and optimize the spin current focusing in graphene. Demonstrate the use of graphene based spin current focusing in spintronic oscillators.

Impact and results

The project will make use of graphene's outstanding spin coherence length to drive spintronic nano-oscillators at microwave frequencies. The project has an enormous potential to revolutionize how wideband (1-100 GHz) microwave signals can be generated, modulated and detected in future graphen based microwave devices.

Planned design and implementation

The project allows NanOsc to collaborate with Sweden's strongest players in graphene spin currents (Chalmers) and spintronic nano-oscillators (University of Gothenburg). The project is a collaboration between these three parties which all contribute their respective expertise in materials, material characterization, lithography, spin wave microscopy and microwave measurements.
